Great device for automation

I've been looking for a way to have network connectivity to a relay. All my other attempts have involved SBCs with custom software written on them, coupled with an add-on relay. This product makes these types of tasks SO MUCH SIMPLER! Follow the instructions, make sure you are not exceeding the specs, and this tiny device will work wonders!

Disaster

Well, this was an interesting disaster. Watching the 'Make a Smart Garage Door Opener' video inspired me to get this device. So I was aware of the jumper that needed to be set to the 12vdc position, and I paid close attention to the +/- (or the L/N as they are also labeled) before connecting to my 12v DC power source.

And yet the relay still managed to melt itself within a minute. I had seen on Amazon reviews that there were some build quality issues, but I thought they may have been early prototypes or some such.

Nope, by the time I smelled the odor of hot components, the damage was done. The case itself had deformed near + lead.

Chan, thanks for your honest review. This is not typical of the experience most have with this unit. According to the manufacturer, the only way the 10 ohm fusible resistor can blow and melt a hole in the side of the unit is if the +/- is misconnected, and this happens by design to protect against a larger problem - this misconnection could likely be due to a mislabeling on the power supply itself, or the power supply itself could be faulty. Shelly has a Facebook forum and a support email where they are usually really good about helping to solve these types of issues. The Shelly 1 comes with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty, so it will be no trouble to replace this. We've been using a number of these for well over a year with no issues, in a number of different scenarios. We're sorry to hear that your experience was bad.

Great device

I used this device to control outdoor front lights, and will use for other projects too. It is small enough to fit inside an existing switch box, and it respects your privacy by having 3 access levels:
1) It can work as a WIFI access point without connecting to Internet - you simply connect to its own WIFI and manage the device.
2) It can connect to existing WIFI. You connect to it by using its IP address assigned by your router. This way you can download new firmware.
3) When using option 2), the third option is to connect the device to Shelly cloud.

With 1 and 2 you can only manage device from inside your home. With 3 you can manage using your phone from anywhere. 1 provides the most privacy, 3 provides the least privacy but a lot of flexibility.
