The CloudShell2 NAS kit for the ODROID-XU4 and XU4Q is an affordable DIY Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution with RAID support. Like the original CloudShell, it includes a color LCD and IR receiver on the front, but adds support for USB Attached SCSI (UAS or UASP) and useful data storage technologies (RAID0, RAID1 and SPAN). It offers dual slots for 3.5" HDD/SSD drives. The CloudShell2 also includes a USB3.0 to SATA bridge (JMicron JMS561) which supports UAS and allows installation of dual 3.5" SATA HDD/SSD storage.

Please note that the XU4/XU4Q is not included with the purchase of the CloudShell2.

Really poor quality build.

The USB3 is so overly fragile that even handling it with care it broke and pulled all the traces on the PCB with it, breaking them and rendering the whole thing unusable.

Should've Looked More

Had this for a little over a year, maybe 2. It fried. I still have a Cloudshell 1 on my other XU4, and that's surprising still working after 5 years.

We're sorry to hear about your issue. We've run ours for a number of years with no problems, 24/7. If you need a replacement mainboard for the CloudShell2, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Worth the price!

I read a review from someone who thought the CS2 wasn't worth the price.

What they failed to mention is that there is a custom PCB that not only controls the screen, but it also has the built-in RAID functionality. In my tests with the CS2, I've been able to replace a drive in the mirrored array with a new drive, reboot, and go immediately back to work while the RAID is rebuilding. Try this same procedure in a super-expensive rack-mount server, and you'll probably be offline until the RAID is 100% rebuilt (which I can say from experience can take most of a workday).

I use the CS2 as my network file server and it stores about 2TB of data. Having the peace of mind knowing that I can get it back online in case of a hardware failure with a quick drive swap is invaluable!

Save your money. Definitely not worth the $69.95.

Save your money. A few pieces of cut plexy glass, an lcd panel with 2 sata connectors, a noisy fan and it's not that sturdy. Definitely not worth the $69.95.

After a few days you will want to turn the tiny display off. The fan is to noisy, even with the adapter connected. I thought it was my cable box that was making the noise, but after powering down the CloudShell 2 I learned it was the noise maker. My old Netgear NAS is much quieter and goes to sleep. The documentation that comes with the CloudShell 2 is horrible and the web site is not much better. I could go on and on about this, but I would stay away from the CloudShell 2. Now the Odroid XU4 is a big winner in my book, also the HC1 which I use as a secure Nextcloud server

I am really sorry for your experience. We have been running our database on the Cloudshell 2 without any issues. Regarding the fan, you can actually install a script where the fan will only run when needed depending on the load it is receiving. We would really like to make you a happy customer and if there is any support you need please let us know.

Great DIY NAS server for home or office

We set one of these up quite a few months ago as a file server for our office with 2x 1TB drives in a mirrored configuration. File transfers over gigabit Ethernet are as fast as can be and the unit has worked extremely reliably 24/7 under heavy use.

We can rest easy knowing that if anything goes wrong with it, we can work on it ourselves. Replacement parts are available and inexpensive, compared to an off-the-shelf NAS.
