The ODROID-HC2 is a mini PC which can be an affordable solution for a network attached storage (NAS) server. This home cloud-server centralizes data and enables users to share and stream multimedia files to phones, tablets and other devices on a network. Ideal for a single user on many devices, sharing between family members, developers or a group. Plenty of software is available with simple configurations to tailor the ODROID-HC2 to your specific needs. Upgrade the storage capacity of your server with a larger HDD/SSD. The HC2 is built with a high performance SATA port and a Gigabit Ethernet port, to build a faster network storage device. It's engineered metal frame body is designed to store a 2.5 inch HDD/SSD or 3.5inch HDD with great heat dissipation, and the frame is made to be stackable, depending on your needs.

The HC2 is based on the very powerful ODROID-XU4 platform. It can run Samba, FTP, NFS, SSH, NGINX, Apache, SQL, Docker, WordPress and other server software smoothly with full Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Arch and OMV. Available and ready-to-go OS distributions are on our WiKi. Any OS for XU4 is fully compatible with the HC2.

Excellent for niche/light-duty NAS, but watch out

After my Seagate Central died, I looked at a DIY/ARM/Pi to replace it -- I recycled a Pi4 with USB disks, but was not so happy with throughput, so this HC2 with its SATA I/O seemed natural. I bought the case and everything.

Speed and functionality using OMV were excellent! I thought I had found the perfect little platform. But, then I noticed that the big mechanical drive was running hot -- the fanless heatsink is big enough for the processor, but there was not enough airflow inside the case for a busy mechanical drive, and TimeMachine makes it spin a lot by default. Tsk, what to do.

I ended up splitting my NAS and moving the bigger mech drives with a mirror onto a HC4 with which I'm very happy as a backup server -- no airflow issues there. As for this HC2, I installed a cheapish 2TB SSD to keep it cool and made it my always-on read-only media server located out on my IOT DMZ where it can serve video and push airplay tunes to all those insecure clients scattered around the place. It's been a reliable asset for that purpose.

Baaka, thanks for the review! We'd love if you would write a companion review for the HC4 as well!

Good combination of features for the price

This was purchased to replace a failing semi-proprietary owncloud box, and I have to say it's been wonderful. The real Ethernet port (not USB-Ethernet) and a real, onboard SATA port means this thing has been relatively snappy (Nextcloud is a resource heavy package) and is capable of serving the cloud system, a Gnu Social instance, and some internal webpages over both clear and TOR to my small organization.

I like it so much I've decided to consolidate a C2 running media server software and a Pi running chat and email servers down to another one of these units.

HC2 and C2 arrived dead

Be warned purchasing products from hard kernel. I purchased 3 products, C2, HC1 and HC2. Both C2 and HC2 arrived dead. I paid for shipping to repair the C2. I requested from HK to Kay for shipping to revisit the HC2 and they refused. Junk products and bad service.

Customer did not purchase these items from us, so not publishing the review. -Bo

Buen producto
