Good if you're tech-savvy.

I got a Home Assistant Voice at the same time as this Green and set up was super easy. The flexibility of what you can do with Home Assistant software is amazing.

The part that's not amazing, is the very limited number of devices that work with Home Assistant "out-of-the-box". Most devices that do work with Home Assistant need to be flashed with custom firmware to be used.

All-in-all, I'm happy with it but if you are expecting it to work as well as Alexa or Google Home you are going to be disappointed.

Simple and easy to setup

Just plug it in. I was surprised how easy to get Home Assistant up and running with this. I would recommend this for all 1st timers. Don't fight getting HA installed on something else. Use the Green to get going fast and spend your time on getting your house setup in HA. Once you've mastered HA, then you can think about moving to a different platform if the Green isn't enough.

Home Assistant is very vague about this device.

I want to stress that this review in no way reflects on ameriDroid - they were great in trying to help me get this thing working, and even offered to take it back.

I purchased the device based on Nabu Casa saying that it was ready to go, OS was installed. That's not the case - it has a bootloader that downloads the latest and greatest OS when you start it for the first time. Except mine didn't. I had a page with a bunch of errors and none of the recovery options would work.

After hours of troubleshooting and Nabu Casa telling me that it's because I didn't have an internet connection (ignoring the fact that it did indeed download the OS but failed to install it the first time) I discovered that the device was failing because it didn't seem to have the date and time for it's internal SSL checks while starting Home Assistant. It told me that the SSL certificates it was using were not valid yet, indicating the time was wrong and in the past.

Once I allowed it to have the time from my router, and used the jumpers inside the case to put the unit in emergency recovery mode, it installed just fine and has been running without errors.

If you're going to get one of these, the hardware seems fine - but before you do start:

1: Reboot your modem, then your router.
2: Make sure your router is providing the correct time and date via NTP.
3: Make sure you have a good, stable internet connection.

You can read my entire blog post about setting this unit up here: https://wereboar.com/projects/index.php/2025/02/26/my-misadventures-with-a-home-assistant-green/

5-Stars despite the actual rating, Excellent Service, and a Super Product!

This should have been a 5-star review, but the review software won't let me change it!!! The HA-Green is a great product, was very easy to convert to from my RPI, and is working beautifully! The store gave excellent service as well! Thanks very much!
