- ⚠️ IMPORTANT – WHAT “PLUG-AND-PLAY” MEANS FOR HOME ASSISTANT GREEN⚠️
This device is truly the easiest way to get started with Home Assistant, but it still needs an internet connection to finish setup:
1. You connect the Home Assistant Green to power and to your router with an Ethernet cable.
2. On the very first boot it automatically downloads the latest Home Assistant OS from GitHub (usually takes 5–15 minutes depending on your internet speed).
3. After the download and install finishes, the device will proceed to boot the HA OS and you can reach the normal Home Assistant interface at http://homeassistant.local:8123 or via the IP address (For example if the IP assigned to your device is 192.168.1.15, you will need to reach http://192.168.1.15:8123 from any browser connected to the same network).

If for any reason this process fails, you might need to follow these instructions to make sure the OS is correctly installed "https://support.nabucasa.com/hc/en-us/articles/25161225495837-Resetting-Home-Assistant-Green"

Trivia Time!
Ameridroid handled the order just fine. Not the fastest delivery but thats fine.
I am new to HA and so far everything I have attempted to achieve has taken about 2-10 times the effort I expected. I am 20 hours deep into the overall configuration and still far from the results I had hoped for. Initial install wasn't bad but I have already had to completely remove and reinstall multiple devices due to an error with Matter/Thread. Every new device presents fresh challenges and where a polished corporate product would require a single install HA requires install plus additional configuration in a variety of locations with made up names. Having been involved with complicated custom UI design for a few websites I can relate to the HA team on this monumental challenge. They are likely doing their best to build a system that is as powerful and usable as possible but they are dealing with a massive ecosystem of dependencies and external factors that they don't control. I cant be sure if it is just I who have grown out of touch with IT or if these guys just like to invent new words to describe the same old stuff for fun but I am surprised to find just how big the learning curve is considering my extensive although slightly dated experience in IT. I have always been more comfortable with hardware than software and this system seems like its a programmers dream. I would not in good conscience recommend this to non-technical people especially family members as this would surely result in me having to come to their house on a regular bases to troubleshoot or configure it. I am holding out hope that once I am a bit more comfortable with the environment that things will really start to fall into place but right now I just frustrated by the time this is taking.
Hello,
Thank you for your order and for taking the time to share this detailed feedback—we truly appreciate it.
We're glad the Home Assistant Green arrived safely and that Ameridroid's handling of the order met your expectations. USPS Ground Advantage is indeed the most economical option, and it sounds like delivery was right within the typical 3-5 business day window (Sometimes USPS can take up to 14 business days).
We completely understand your surprise at the learning curve—Home Assistant is incredibly powerful and flexible precisely because it supports such a vast ecosystem of devices and protocols without relying on cloud services or manufacturer silos. That depth means there's often more upfront configuration than with polished commercial hubs (like those from big tech companies), especially when dealing with standards like Matter and Thread, which involve multiple layers (networks, border routers, credentials, etc.). Many users with strong IT backgrounds share similar early experiences: it can feel overwhelming at first with all the terminology (integrations, entities, etc.) and scattered setup steps. You're spot on that it's more of a 'programmer's dream' for deep customization, and it's not ideally suited for completely non-technical users without some ongoing support.
That said, the initial hurdles with adding devices—especially Matter/Thread ones—are some of the most common pain points we hear about, and they often stem from lingering credentials or conflicting border routers (e.g., from Apple Home, Google Home, or even a phone's previous setup).
Wi-Fi devices from supported brands usually auto-discover quickly once on the same network, while Zigbee/Z-Wave require a compatible USB stick and a quick 'add device' scan after setting up those protocols.
You're absolutely right that once the basics click and devices are integrated, things start to 'fall into place' much faster—the unified dashboard, local privacy, and automation power are what keep most users hooked long-term. It's the easiest open-source way to bring everything together securely without vendor lock-in.
If you're open to it, the Home Assistant community forums (community.home-assistant.io) are fantastic for beginner questions—search for your specific devices or post details, and folks often share step-by-step fixes. There are also great YouTube channels like 'Everything Smart Home' with beginner-friendly tutorials.
We hope you'll stick with it a bit longer and see the payoff—many reviewers echo your sentiments early on but end up loving it. If there's anything specific we can help with (e.g., device recommendations or setup questions), just let us know!
Best regards,
Brandon

Really excited to get into the home automation world, and this is the perfect jumping off point. I found a 3D printed mount on Etsy, and was able to mount this device in a cabinet next to my router. It just works, and I'm slowly but surely adding devices to be controlled by one central hub.
